Ambulance cover is an arrangement that pays some or all eligible ambulance costs. Medicare does not generally cover ambulance services. Funding and concessions vary across Australian states and territories, and private policies differ. Check your own arrangements, including interstate travel, rather than assuming a Medicare card or health insurance automatically covers every ambulance bill.
What should I check in a policy?
Ask whether it covers emergency and non-emergency transport, attendance without transport and different transport types. Check waiting periods, limits, exclusions and whether services outside your home state are included. A policy title such as ambulance cover may hide important differences.
State-funded arrangements and concession eligibility also vary. Use the official ambulance service or insurer's information for your circumstances. Do not apply a rule for another state or another person's card to yourself.
For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing: Ambulance - PrivateHealth.gov.au.
Is ambulance cover included in private health insurance?
It may be included, limited or sold separately. Hospital cover, extras and ambulance cover are distinct concepts. Read the policy details and ask the insurer to confirm any uncertainty in writing where practical.
If you already receive state-based cover, check what happens when travelling. A reciprocal arrangement or insurer benefit may have conditions. Keep relevant membership or policy details accessible, but do not delay calling for emergency help to locate them.
Should cost affect an emergency decision?
If there is a life-threatening emergency, call 000. Do not drive yourself with suspected heart attack or stroke symptoms because you are unsure about a bill. The immediate priority is safe care; billing questions can be addressed afterwards.
Doccio's online doctor service is separate from ambulance services and cannot provide emergency transport. This glossary explains coverage questions, not a substitute for emergency triage. Review your cover in advance while well, especially before interstate travel or a change in insurance, rather than trying to interpret a policy during a crisis.
Where to go next
Read consultation pricing to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
