Hours and after-hours care in NT

Doctor care is available 8am–6pm Mon–Fri (AEST/AEDT) at the standard rate. Outside that window the same consultation is handled at the after-hours rate, and requests are still reviewed by an Australian-registered doctor.

The Northern Territory is half an hour behind Sydney for most of the year, and an hour and a half behind during eastern daylight saving. Our 8am–6pm Sydney weekday hours are 7.30am–5.30pm in Darwin for most of the year, and 6.30am–4.30pm over the summer months.

Using Doccio in Northern Territory

What it's like here

The Territory has the smallest population and the longest distances, and a large share of care is delivered by community-controlled and remote services. Telehealth is a supplement to that care for routine, administrative requests — not a replacement for it.

Prescriptions and pharmacies

Prescriptions are issued as electronic prescriptions. You receive a link by SMS and show it at any pharmacy in the Northern Territory that dispenses electronic prescriptions, which is now the great majority of them. Nothing needs to be posted, and you can use the same link at a different pharmacy if the first one cannot fill it.

Certificates and employers

NT employers and study providers accept an ordinary medical certificate as evidence for an absence, and every Doccio certificate carries a verification reference an employer can check.

What it costs

Prices are the same everywhere in Australia. There is no membership and no subscription.

When to be seen in person instead

Telehealth is not the right choice for everything. If you need to be examined, have severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, or are worried about someone's safety, get care in person. The NT has Medicare Urgent Care Clinics in Darwin and Alice Springs, alongside community health services, for urgent problems that are not emergencies.

In an emergency, call 000.
