Bulk-billed telehealth is an eligible remote healthcare service for which the provider accepts the Medicare benefit as full payment for that service. The patient does not pay a gap for the bulk-billed item. Having a Medicare card does not mean every online consultation qualifies or that every provider offers bulk billing.
What determines whether I can use it?
Both Medicare eligibility and the rules for the particular service matter. The consultation type, clinician, relationship with the practice and applicable exemptions may affect whether a benefit can be claimed. Rules differ across services, so a general statement about telehealth cannot confirm your individual eligibility.
Ask the provider before booking whether the appointment will be bulk billed, privately billed or eligible for a rebate. A clinic may use different billing arrangements for different patients or appointment types. Do not assume that a low advertised fee means the service is bulk billed.
For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Healthdirect Australia: Bulk billing for medical services - Medicare benefit and gap payments.
How is it different from paying and claiming back?
When a service is privately billed, you may pay the provider and, if eligible, claim a Medicare benefit. Any amount left after the benefit is your out-of-pocket cost. With bulk billing, the provider accepts the benefit for the eligible service rather than charging a gap for that item.
Other services during the same episode of care can have separate costs. Ask about tests, specialist care and pharmacy charges rather than assuming everything associated with the appointment is included.
What does this mean for Doccio?
Doccio's supplied pricing describes a pay-per-consult service. Check its current pricing and bulk-billing information rather than assuming a Medicare rebate or free appointment. The general definition on this page does not create an entitlement to a Doccio rebate.
Clinical suitability is a separate question from billing. If an examination or emergency care is needed, cost questions should not delay seeking the appropriate level of care.
Where to go next
Read Doccio information about bulk billing to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
