Carer’s leave
Carer’s leave explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.
By Doccio Clinical Team · Sources reviewed September 2026
Carer's leave allows an employee to provide care or support to an immediate family or household member who needs it because of illness, injury or an unexpected emergency. Paid and unpaid entitlements depend on the applicable employment rules and circumstances. It is different from leave for the employee's own illness. Fair Work sick and carer’s leave guidance
Explain the care need accurately
Tell your employer as soon as possible that leave is needed and how long you expect to be away. Check the evidence requirement. Fair Work identifies medical certificates and statutory declarations as examples of evidence that may support a leave request. Fair Work guidance on notice and medical evidence
If seeking a medical document, explain who needs care, the relationship and the relevant dates. The doctor needs a sufficient basis for any opinion. Do not assume that a certificate about the patient's illness automatically describes another person's need to be absent from work.
Caring and ordinary arrangements differ
The reason care or support is needed matters. A routine arrangement and an unexpected emergency may involve different facts. If you are unsure how an entitlement applies, ask your employer or Fair Work rather than expecting a clinician to determine every employment issue.
A certificate supports the circumstances a doctor can reasonably document. It does not calculate the employee's remaining leave balance or decide whether a particular period must be paid. Those matters depend on employment records and rules. Fair Work sick and carer’s leave guidance
Choose the right assessment pathway
Read Doccio's carer's leave certificate guide before booking. Explain whether the person needing care is being assessed and what evidence the recipient requires. A doctor decides whether a certificate is supported and whether remote assessment is appropriate.
Protect the patient's privacy when submitting evidence. If the employer asks for more detail, clarify exactly what is needed and why. You may be able to resolve the request without sharing a broad medical history. Where a document has an error, ask the issuing service to correct it instead of changing it yourself.
