A common cold is an infection of the upper airways caused by a virus. A blocked or runny nose, sneezing, sore throat and cough can occur together. The term describes an illness, not simply feeling cold or being caught in wet weather. Healthdirect Australia: Colds

What matters when symptoms overlap

Cold symptoms can resemble other respiratory illnesses. The name you give the illness at home does not establish its cause. Tell a clinician when symptoms started, whether they are changing and whether you have been around someone unwell. If you have tested for another infection, explain which test you used and when.

Keep the timeline simple. “My nose started running on Monday and the cough began on Wednesday” is more useful than saying you have had the flu all week without a diagnosis. Mention any breathing difficulty, chest discomfort or difficulty drinking before discussing a certificate.

Looking after yourself and others

Rest and fluids can help you manage an uncomplicated cold. Ask a pharmacist about suitable symptom relief, particularly if you take regular medicines, are pregnant or are caring for a child. A product suitable for one household member may not suit another. Healthdirect Australia: Colds

Do not assume you need a prescription because mucus changes colour or symptoms are inconvenient. A doctor decides what assessment or treatment is appropriate. Think about contact with vulnerable people and follow relevant workplace or care-setting advice while unwell.

When to get help

Seek urgent help for serious breathing difficulty, severe chest pain, collapse or rapidly worsening illness. A doctor should assess symptoms that persist, worsen or cause concern, especially when you have a condition that increases the consequences of respiratory illness. Healthdirect Australia: Colds

For non-emergency assessment, read about Doccio's cold and flu consultations. If illness affects work, describe your actual duties and the dates affected; a certificate is a separate clinical decision. Keep any return-to-work question distinct from the question of whether you feel well enough to manage daily activities.
