A concession card is a government-issued card that may provide access to reduced costs or other benefits. Different cards have different eligibility and benefits. Holding one does not automatically make every doctor appointment free, establish a Medicare rebate for every service or mean all providers must offer the same discount.

Which card do I have?

Check the exact card name, expiry date and issuing agency. Services Australia administers several concession and health care cards with different rules. Some benefits are federal, while others depend on a state, territory, local authority or participating provider.

Keep personal information on the card secure and report loss or changes through the official process. Do not assume another family member's entitlement applies to you without checking the rules.

For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Services Australia: Concession and health care cards - Services Australia.

How does it affect a medical appointment?

A provider may offer a concession fee or bulk bill eligible services, but its policy and the relevant funding rules still matter. Ask before booking and explain the type of card you hold. A concession card is not interchangeable with a Medicare card or a DVA card.

Tests, medicines, transport and specialist services can each have separate eligibility and cost arrangements. Confirm the specific benefit rather than assuming a discount at one service applies everywhere. If a provider quotes a rebate, ask whether it applies to your actual appointment.

What should I check with Doccio?

Use Doccio's pricing page and ask about any current concession arrangements through its official process. The supplied service model is pay per consultation; this glossary does not promise a concession rate, bulk billing or a Medicare benefit.

A doctor decides what care is appropriate regardless of the administrative category. If examination or urgent treatment is needed, the service may direct you elsewhere. For a life-threatening emergency, call 000 rather than delaying care while checking whether a particular card covers the cost.

Where to go next

Read consultation pricing to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
