COVID-19 is an infectious illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Symptoms can include cough, fever, sore throat, tiredness or a change in taste or smell. Some people become seriously unwell. Testing and clinical advice help guide care, particularly for people at higher risk of complications.
How do I know if it is COVID-19?
Symptoms overlap with other respiratory infections. A rapid antigen test or a laboratory test may be useful, depending on the situation and current advice. A negative result does not automatically explain ongoing symptoms or make it safe to ignore a worsening illness.
Tell the clinician when symptoms began, your test results and any conditions that could increase risk. If you are pregnant, older, immunocompromised or have significant chronic disease, seek advice early rather than waiting until you feel very unwell. Some treatment decisions are time-sensitive, and a doctor must assess suitability.
For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Healthdirect Australia: COVID-19 — vaccination, testing, symptoms - Healthdirect Australia.
What should I do while unwell?
Rest, maintain suitable fluids and reduce the chance of passing the infection to others. Follow current Australian and state guidance for staying home, masks and contact with vulnerable people. Workplaces, aged-care services and healthcare settings may have their own requirements.
Ask what changes to monitor and when to arrange review. If symptoms continue after the initial infection, document their effect on breathing, energy, concentration and normal activities. A previous positive test does not mean every later symptom is caused by COVID-19; other explanations may need assessment.
When is it an emergency?
Call 000 for severe breathing difficulty, persistent severe chest pain, blue lips, collapse or confusion. Very little urine, inability to drink or significant deterioration needs urgent care. Telehealth may help with a stable illness, but it should not delay oxygen checks, examination or hospital assessment when those are needed.
