eScript (electronic prescription)
eScript (electronic prescription) explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.
By Doccio Clinical Team · Sources reviewed September 2026
An eScript is a prescription created and managed electronically. Instead of receiving a conventional paper prescription, you may receive a token by SMS or email that lets a pharmacy retrieve it. The electronic format changes how the prescription is accessed; it does not remove clinical prescribing requirements. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance
What arrives on your phone
The message usually contains a link to a token with a barcode or QR code. That token is an access key, not a photograph of a paper prescription. Show it to the pharmacy or follow the pharmacy's instructions for sending it securely. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance
Check that you can find the message before travelling. If several people in your household receive messages on the same phone, confirm whose prescription it is. Do not post the token publicly or send it to multiple services without understanding what each recipient will do with it.
The pharmacy still makes a dispensing decision
An eScript does not guarantee stock, a particular price or immediate supply. The pharmacist checks the prescription and relevant dispensing requirements. Ask about availability and cost directly, especially if you need to travel or arrange someone else to collect it.
If repeats are authorised, the pharmacy generally provides the next repeat token after dispensing. Keep the current token rather than assuming the original message will remain the correct one for every supply. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance
Getting an eScript through Doccio
Doccio's repeat prescription service involves assessment. A doctor decides whether prescribing is appropriate and whether they have enough information. The service fee is separate from the pharmacy's charge for any item supplied.
If no message arrives, contact the prescribing service and confirm your details. Do not submit another paid request solely because an SMS is delayed. If treatment is urgent or you are becoming unwell, explain that clearly and seek appropriate care rather than relying on an administrative resend to resolve a clinical problem.
