Female pattern hair loss is gradual thinning of scalp hair, often most noticeable as a widening part or reduced density over the top of the head. It is also called androgenetic alopecia. Sudden shedding, bald patches or an inflamed scalp may have other causes and should be assessed separately.

How is it different from temporary shedding?

Hair can shed after illness, childbirth, major stress or other changes. Pattern hair loss tends to develop gradually, although more than one process can occur at the same time. A doctor examines the scalp and the pattern rather than diagnosing from the amount of hair in a brush alone.

Take photographs using similar lighting and the same parting if you want to document change. Note when thinning began, whether it is accelerating and whether there is itching, pain or scaling. Mention menstrual changes, recent illness, family history and any new medicines or supplements.

For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Healthdirect Australia: Female pattern hair loss - Healthdirect Australia.

Are blood tests always needed?

Not everyone needs the same tests. The clinician may investigate iron status, thyroid function or hormonal issues if the history or examination suggests them. Buying a broad test panel without clinical guidance may not explain the hair change.

Ask what diagnosis is most likely, what the realistic management options are and how progress will be assessed. A doctor decides whether treatment is appropriate, including consideration of pregnancy or plans to become pregnant. Hair changes usually need a longer review horizon than a few days, so agree on follow-up rather than repeatedly changing products.

When should I arrange an examination?

Prompt review is useful for rapid loss, distinct bald areas, scalp pain, redness or signs of scarring. A remote consultation can discuss the history and photographs, but direct scalp examination may be required. Avoid assuming that every form of hair loss shares the same treatment or expected course.
