Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition associated with widespread pain, often alongside fatigue, unrefreshing sleep and difficulty concentrating. Symptoms can fluctuate and affect everyday function. There is no single routine test that confirms it, so assessment considers the symptom pattern and whether other conditions need investigation.

Does a normal test mean the pain is not real?

No. Routine tests may be used to investigate other explanations, rather than measure fibromyalgia itself. The pain and fatigue can be substantial even when basic results are normal. A diagnosis should come from clinical assessment, not from being told that nothing showed up on a test.

Describe where the pain occurs, how sleep feels and what happens after activity. Explain which tasks have become difficult. A short record of better and worse days can be more useful than a long list of isolated pain scores.

For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Healthdirect Australia: Fibromyalgia - Healthdirect Australia.

What does management involve?

Care is individual and may include education about pain, suitable physical activity, pacing, sleep support and psychological strategies. Medical treatment may be considered after discussing benefits, risks and personal goals. A single approach does not suit everyone, and progress may be measured by function as well as pain intensity.

Ask for a plan that fits your current capacity. If an activity repeatedly leaves you much worse, report that rather than assuming you must push through. Bring details of previous treatments and unwanted effects. Coordinated follow-up can help avoid conflicting advice from several separate services.

What if symptoms change?

New focal weakness, a swollen joint, fever, unexplained weight loss or a major change in pain needs review. Do not automatically attribute every new symptom to fibromyalgia. Telehealth can support continuity and planning, but examination is sometimes necessary. If distress becomes overwhelming or you cannot stay safe, seek urgent mental health support; call 000 for immediate danger.
