Fitness for work
Fitness for work explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.
By Doccio Clinical Team · Sources reviewed September 2026
Fitness for work concerns whether a person can safely perform the relevant duties in their circumstances. It is more specific than simply feeling better after an illness. A fitness or capacity assessment may need information about the job, hazards, restrictions and possible adjustments. The duties matter
Explain what the role actually involves, including driving, machinery, lifting, shift work or responsibility for others. A general job title may leave out the task that creates the main concern. Bring an employer's form or duty description if one has been requested.
Tell the clinician what has changed since the illness or injury and whether symptoms or treatment affect alertness, movement or concentration. Do not assume that an absence certificate automatically confirms readiness for every duty on the next day.
Different documents have different purposes
A standard certificate for time away from work is not necessarily an occupational fitness report or a workers compensation capacity certificate. The required form and assessment may vary by purpose and jurisdiction. Ask the employer or scheme what is needed before booking. A doctor may need examination, records or specialist information. Some assessments are outside the scope of a routine telehealth service. The clinician should decide what opinion can be supported rather than simply reproducing the wording requested by a workplace.
Discuss restrictions and review
If adjustments are recommended, ask how they should be described and when they should be reviewed. The employer and relevant professionals may need to coordinate the practical arrangements. A document alone does not implement a safe return-to-work plan.
Doccio's return-to-work guide explains the distinction. Confirm service suitability before paying for a specialised form. If the workplace request is unclear or disputed, seek appropriate employment advice. The clinician assesses health and capacity; they do not determine every legal entitlement or workplace decision merely by issuing a certificate.
