General practitioner (GP)
General practitioner (GP) explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.
By Doccio Clinical Team · Sources reviewed September 2026
A general practitioner is a doctor who provides broad primary care, including assessment of health concerns, preventive care and coordination with other services. GPs can help manage both new problems and ongoing conditions. The role involves more than issuing prescriptions, referrals or medical certificates. Healthdirect Australia: The role of a GP
Why a usual GP can be useful
A clinician who knows your history can place a new concern in the context of earlier care. That can help with monitoring, records and follow-up. Tell any new service who your usual GP is and what they are currently managing.
If you use telehealth for convenience or because your usual clinic is unavailable, bring relevant history and treatment information. Do not assume every online doctor can automatically access the same records. Ask whether a consultation summary can be shared appropriately.
Registration and titles matter
Check a clinician's current registration through Ahpra's public register. Different forms of registration and recognised specialties have specific meanings. Do not infer specialist general practice qualifications simply because a website uses the word doctor or offers a familiar service. You can ask about the clinician's role and whether the service suits your needs. A responsible provider should explain when a concern requires examination, specialist input or another care setting.
Use the consultation for the clinical question
Explain the symptoms and your goals before focusing only on a requested document. A doctor decides whether a prescription, referral or certificate is supported. If a condition needs ongoing care, ask who will coordinate the next steps and when review is needed.
Doccio's online doctor service provides access to Australian-registered doctors according to its service information. Check current availability and the selected service's scope. An online appointment can form part of your care, but it should not leave unclear who is responsible for long-term monitoring or outstanding results. Bringing information back to your usual clinician can help keep that pathway connected.
