Influenza is a contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. It can make people much more unwell than an ordinary cold and sometimes causes serious complications. Fever, aches, fatigue and respiratory symptoms can occur, but symptoms alone do not reliably identify which virus is responsible. Healthdirect Australia: Flu (influenza)

Why the distinction matters

People often use “flu” to describe any unpleasant cold. For a clinical assessment, explain the symptoms rather than relying on that label. Note when you first became unwell, whether the onset was sudden and whether you can manage fluids and ordinary activities.

Tell the doctor about pregnancy, immune suppression, significant chronic conditions or other factors that may change your care needs. Early advice can matter for people at greater risk of severe illness. Do not wait for a routine online appointment if you are becoming seriously unwell. Healthdirect Australia: Flu (influenza)

What an assessment can decide

A clinician considers your history, current symptoms and whether examination or testing would change management. An online discussion may be useful, but it cannot provide every observation available in person. A doctor decides which treatment or referral is appropriate; asking specifically for a prescription does not establish a clinical need.

Prepare the dates of any tests and explain whether symptoms changed afterwards. A negative result at one point should not become a reason to ignore later deterioration. Ask what changes should prompt reassessment and who to contact if the service is closed.

Work, recovery and prevention

If you cannot work, tell your employer promptly and check the evidence requirement. Doccio's cold and flu information links assessment with appropriate next steps. A certificate does not itself establish that you are no longer infectious or ready for every type of work.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, severe chest pain, collapse or confusion. Discuss ongoing prevention, including vaccination suitability, with a doctor or pharmacist when appropriate. Healthdirect Australia: Flu (influenza) A personalised conversation is more useful than assuming that a previous infection protects you against every future respiratory illness.
