Medical Board of Australia
Medical Board of Australia explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.
By Doccio Clinical Team · Sources reviewed September 2026
The Medical Board of Australia regulates medical practitioners within the national registration system. It publishes standards, codes and guidelines relevant to doctors' professional practice, including telehealth. Ahpra supports the National Boards and provides the public register used to check registration details. Why its telehealth guidance matters
An online consultation is still medical practice. The doctor must consider whether they have enough information and whether the format is appropriate. A service cannot turn a requested prescription or certificate into an automatic entitlement simply because the process happens online.
A doctor may ask for more history, records, examination or tests. They may recommend another service or decline a requested outcome. The important question is whether the decision is clinically supported and clearly explained, not whether it matches a preselected item in a booking form. Medical Board telehealth guidelines
Separate the Board from the treating clinic
The Board's role is regulation, not providing your routine consultation or dispensing a prescription. For questions about an appointment, document delivery or the clinical plan, contact the treating service through its normal process.
For registration information, use Ahpra's public register. If you want to understand a professional standard, read the current Board guidance and its context. A short quotation from an old webpage may not capture the whole rule or how it applies to a particular case.
What you can expect to clarify
You can ask who the doctor is, what assessment is needed and why a different care setting has been recommended. You can also ask how follow-up and record sharing will work. These practical questions help translate professional responsibilities into a clear care pathway.
Doccio's online doctor service operates within those clinical responsibilities. The doctor decides what is appropriate. Neither a registration statement nor a reference to Board guidance should be read as a guarantee of a prescription, a certificate or a particular result from an individual consultation.
