A medical certificate is a document in which a medical practitioner records a supported clinical opinion for a stated purpose. In employment, it can provide evidence that illness or injury affected a person's capacity to work, or that care was required. The content must reflect what the assessment supports. Check what the recipient needs
An employer, university, school or other organisation may have different evidence requirements. Ask whether it needs a standard absence certificate, a particular form or a more detailed capacity assessment. These are not automatically interchangeable documents.
For work, notify your employer as soon as possible and explain the expected period of absence. Fair Work recognises medical certificates and statutory declarations as examples of evidence that may be reasonable. An employer can request evidence for a short absence, including one day or less. A request does not decide the outcome
Tell the doctor the actual dates, symptoms and effect on your duties or study. Do not exaggerate symptoms or ask for an inaccurate issue date. The doctor decides whether a certificate is supported and what period or wording is appropriate. Health Professional Councils Authority NSW: Medical certificates: what you should know
If you need treatment as well as documentation, explain both. A certificate does not replace assessment of urgent symptoms. Some requests need examination, records or a different service before a clinician can provide an opinion.
Keep the original accurate
Check your name and dates when the document arrives. Ask the issuing service to correct an error; do not edit the PDF yourself. Submit it through the recipient's nominated process and keep a copy.
Doccio's medical certificate guide explains the assessment pathway and pricing. Certificates carry a verification ID for authenticity checking. Verification does not determine leave balances, payment or every recipient's acceptance decision. If there is a dispute, ask what specific information is missing so the response can address the real question without unnecessarily disclosing additional health details.
