Medicare
Medicare explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.
By Doccio Clinical Team · Sources reviewed September 2026
Medicare is Australia's public health insurance scheme. It helps eligible people access specified health services, subject to the relevant rules. Having Medicare does not mean every private appointment is free, and an online consultation is not automatically eligible for a Medicare benefit simply because it is healthcare. Check the service, not just the card
Eligibility depends on the service and circumstances. Telehealth has specific requirements, and not every provider offers Medicare billing for every appointment. Ask the clinic whether your selected service is private, bulk billed or eligible for a claim before paying. Services Australia telehealth eligibility guidance
A request for your Medicare details may support identification or administration. It should not be interpreted as a promise of a rebate. If the fee description is unclear, ask how much you will pay and whether any benefit is expected.
Keep different costs separate
The consultation, pharmacy supply, pathology, imaging and specialist care may have separate billing arrangements. One service being covered does not settle the others. Ask each provider for the relevant information rather than assuming the first clinic's quote includes the entire care pathway.
For prescriptions, the PBS is a separate subsidy system with its own conditions. Medicare and PBS questions often arise together, but they should not be treated as interchangeable explanations of a charge. Australian Government, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme: PBS frequently asked questions
How this applies to Doccio
Doccio is described as a private pay-per-consult service. Use the Medicare and online doctor guide and check current pricing. Do not assume you can claim a rebate from the listed Doccio fee without explicit confirmation of eligibility and billing arrangements. Doccio’s published service pricing
If cost limits your access to care, ask about available alternatives before booking. A clinic's administrative team can explain fees, while the doctor decides what care is clinically appropriate. For an emergency, seek emergency help rather than delaying assessment while trying to resolve a routine billing question.
