My Health Record
My Health Record explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.
By Doccio Clinical Team · Sources reviewed September 2026
My Health Record is Australia's digital system for storing and sharing key health information. It can include information contributed by healthcare providers and information you add. It is not necessarily a complete copy of every record held by every clinic, hospital or pharmacy you have used. Australian Digital Health Agency: My Health Record
Check what is actually available
Do not assume a new clinician has seen all relevant information simply because you have a record. Tell them about important diagnoses, medicines and recent care. Ask whether a particular result or document is available if it is central to the consultation.
If something appears missing, contact the relevant provider about its record and upload processes. A document not appearing in one system does not prove that the test or appointment did not occur. Keep copies of important information where appropriate.
Understand access and privacy settings
The Australian Digital Health Agency explains how to view and manage the record, including access controls and representative arrangements. Use the official guidance rather than sharing login credentials with another person. Australian Digital Health Agency: My Health Record
If someone helps you manage care, discuss the appropriate authority and access process. Family support does not remove the patient's privacy rights. Tell the treating service if safety or confidentiality concerns affect how information should be communicated.
Use the record as part of the history
A list of prescriptions or results does not replace a conversation about what you currently take, how you feel and what has changed. Explain if a treatment was stopped or never started. A clinician needs current information, not just the existence of an older document.
Doccio's online doctor service can explain its current record-access and sharing arrangements. Do not assume automatic integration without confirmation. Ask how a consultation summary or result will reach your usual clinician when continuity is needed. The record can support connected care, but the responsibilities for follow-up should still be made explicit during the appointment.
Ready when you are.
