A new patient consultation is an appointment with a clinician or practice that has not previously assessed you. It usually involves understanding your current concern and relevant health background. The clinician may need additional information, records or an examination before deciding whether a prescription, certificate, test or referral is appropriate.

What should I have ready?

Prepare a concise medicines list, allergy information and details of important conditions or surgery. Bring relevant results or letters if they are available. Identify the main issue you want addressed and when it started. You do not need to produce a complete life history before seeking care.

Tell the service if you need an interpreter, support person or accessibility adjustment. Confirm that the booking is for you, or clearly identify the patient if you are assisting someone else. Accurate contact details matter for results and follow-up.

For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Healthdirect Australia: The role of a GP.

Can I ask for the same treatment I had elsewhere?

Yes, you can explain what previously helped and provide supporting records. However, the new clinician must make their own assessment. A prior prescription does not obligate them to repeat it, particularly if monitoring, examination or clarification is needed.

Be open about what you hope to achieve, including a document for work or a medication review. Also describe symptoms and safety concerns that may change the plan. An appointment may appropriately end with advice to attend in person or continue with a regular GP.

How do I make the appointment useful?

Start with the most important concern and mention if there are several issues. Ask what has been concluded, what remains uncertain and who will follow up results. Keep a copy of the agreed plan where possible.

See Doccio's online doctor service for its current process and fees. A new-patient telehealth consultation can suit some concerns, but it cannot replace every physical examination or provide emergency care.

Where to go next
