The number of repeats on a prescription tells the pharmacist how many additional supplies have been authorised after the initial dispensing, subject to the prescription's conditions and validity. It is not a promise of unlimited ongoing treatment. Once repeats are used or the prescription expires, a new clinical review may be required.
Is a repeat the same as another prescription?
No. A repeat is an authorised further supply under an existing prescription. A new prescription is a separate prescribing decision. The fact that you have used a medicine before does not mean another prescription can be issued without checking current suitability and monitoring needs.
For electronic prescriptions, a pharmacy generally sends a new token for the next available repeat after dispensing. Use the current token rather than an old one. Ask the pharmacy if you are unsure which message represents the remaining supply.
For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing: Electronic Prescriptions - Australian Digital Health Agency.
Can I collect every repeat at once?
Do not assume so. Timing, clinical directions, subsidy rules and legal requirements can affect supply. Tell the pharmacist about travel or another practical need in advance. They can explain what is possible and whether the prescriber needs to be involved.
Check the dispensing label or ask the pharmacy how many repeats remain. The number of messages on your phone is not a reliable count, because some may relate to already-dispensed tokens or separate prescriptions.
What should I do before running out?
Arrange review early enough for any examination, tests or record checks that may be needed. Bring a current medicines list and describe whether the treatment is helping or causing unwanted effects. Do not assume a short online appointment can always resolve a complex continuation request.
Doccio's prescription service can be checked for suitability. A doctor decides whether another prescription is appropriate, and the consultation fee does not guarantee prescribing. Ask your pharmacist about the existing prescription before booking if the uncertainty is simply how many repeats remain.
Where to go next
Read prescription consultations to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
