A pregnancy test checks for the hormone hCG in urine or blood. Home tests usually use urine, while a clinician may request a blood test in selected circumstances. Timing affects accuracy: testing too early can produce a negative result despite pregnancy. Symptoms, dates and any concerning pain or bleeding still matter.

When should I use a home test?

Follow the instructions for the particular kit, including when to test and how long to wait before reading it. A result read outside the stated time can be misleading. If a period is late and the test is negative, repeat testing or clinical advice may be appropriate.

Tell the clinician the date of the last period, cycle pattern, contraception and when the test was taken. A photograph can document the result, but it does not establish the location or health of a pregnancy.

For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Healthdirect Australia: Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) test - pregnancy | healthdirect.

Does a positive result confirm everything is normal?

No. It indicates that the test detected the hormone, but further care is needed to assess the pregnancy and plan next steps. A blood result also needs clinical interpretation; one number does not answer every question about timing or progression.

Arrange appropriate follow-up and discuss current medicines, supplements and health conditions. If the pregnancy is unexpected, you can ask for non-judgemental information about options. Do not stop important prescribed treatment without advice solely because a home test is positive.

When is it urgent?

Possible pregnancy with significant pelvic or abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting or heavy bleeding needs urgent assessment. Call 000 for collapse or life-threatening symptoms. An early negative urine test does not make severe symptoms safe to ignore.

See Doccio's tests information or online doctor service for suitable routine discussions. A doctor decides whether blood testing, examination, imaging or another care pathway is appropriate. Telehealth cannot by itself confirm where a pregnancy is located.
