A private hospital is operated by a private organisation and licensed under relevant government requirements. Patients may access care using private health insurance or by paying themselves, subject to the hospital and treatment arrangements. Private care can involve several separate fees, and insurance does not guarantee that every cost is covered.
Does private mean I choose every part of care?
Private care may allow choice of treating specialist and hospital, but availability, clinical need and policy arrangements still matter. A private room or a particular admission date is not guaranteed simply because a patient has insurance.
Some private hospitals have emergency departments, while others do not. Check the service's capabilities for planned care. In a medical emergency, call 000 or follow emergency advice rather than travelling to a facility that may not provide the required service.

Which costs should I ask about?
Hospital charges, medical specialists, anaesthesia, investigations and other services can be billed separately. Ask the insurer and providers about excesses, gaps, restrictions and waiting periods. A single estimate may not include every component of an admission.
Clarify whether you are being admitted as a private patient and which policy benefits apply. If paying without insurance, request a clear estimate and explanation of what could change. Financial questions are best addressed before planned treatment where possible.
How does follow-up work?
Ask who will coordinate care after discharge, when results will be reviewed and which symptoms mean you should return. Obtain a discharge summary and an accurate medicines list. Your regular GP may need information to continue care safely.
Doccio's online doctor service may support suitable routine discussions, but does not replace hospital assessment or the treating specialist's follow-up. A remote clinician may need discharge records before advising. Seek urgent care for serious deterioration after discharge rather than waiting for a routine online appointment.
Where to go next
Read online doctor consultations to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
