Prostatitis refers to inflammation or symptoms involving the prostate gland. Some forms are caused by bacterial infection, while others involve longer-term pelvic pain without a clearly identified infection. Symptoms may include urinary difficulty, pelvic discomfort or pain with ejaculation. Fever or inability to pass urine changes the urgency of care.
Is prostatitis the same as an enlarged prostate?
No. The prostate can cause different problems, and urinary symptoms alone do not identify which one is present. A doctor considers infection, obstruction and other causes. New pelvic or urinary symptoms should not be diagnosed solely from an online questionnaire.
Describe burning, urine flow, frequency, blood in urine and any fever or chills. Mention sexual symptoms and recent procedures or infections. Sudden severe testicular pain is a separate emergency and should not be assumed to come from the prostate.

What tests or examinations might be needed?
Urine testing and an examination may be appropriate, with further tests depending on findings. The assessment for an acute infection differs from a review of persistent pelvic pain. Ask what the working diagnosis is and whether test results are needed before deciding on treatment.
For ongoing symptoms, a plan may consider pelvic muscles, pain and urinary function as well as infection. Repeating treatment without reassessing the cause may be unhelpful. Bring previous results and describe what changed during earlier treatment. A doctor decides whether specialist involvement is appropriate.
When should I get urgent help?
Inability to pass urine, fever with significant pelvic or urinary symptoms, severe pain or feeling very unwell needs urgent in-person assessment. Call 000 for collapse, confusion or life-threatening deterioration. Telehealth may support stable follow-up, but an acute episode can require examination and tests that cannot be completed remotely.
