Radiology is the medical specialty concerned with interpreting images of the body and, in some settings, performing image-guided procedures. A radiologist is a medical doctor with specialist training. Radiographers and other imaging professionals perform important technical roles, but their responsibilities differ from those of the clinician reporting the examination.
Who will I meet at the imaging appointment?
Depending on the test, a radiographer, sonographer, nurse or other team member may perform or support the examination. A radiologist may interpret the images afterwards without meeting you directly. For some procedures, the radiologist is directly involved in your care.
Ask staff to explain who is doing what if the process is unclear. Give accurate information about pregnancy possibility, implants, allergies and relevant health conditions. Different imaging methods require different safety checks.
For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Healthdirect Australia: What is a radiographer and a radiologist? - Healthdirect Australia.
What is a radiology report?
It is the interpretation of the images, usually sent to the referring clinician. It may describe findings and recommend further assessment. The report is one part of the clinical picture and should be discussed alongside symptoms, examination and other test results.
An unfamiliar term or an incidental finding can sound alarming without context. Arrange a review rather than drawing conclusions from a phrase alone. Conversely, a report that does not identify a cause does not mean symptoms should be dismissed.
What should I check about access and costs?
Confirm that the provider offers the requested test, whether preparation is needed and what fees or Medicare rules apply. A referral or request does not guarantee that every examination is bulk billed. Ask how images and reports can be shared with the clinicians involved in your care.
See Doccio's imaging service information for appropriate request discussions. A doctor decides whether imaging is indicated. Urgent or emergency symptoms require assessment in a setting that can act promptly on findings, rather than waiting for routine outpatient reporting.
Where to go next
Read imaging to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
