Repeat token
Repeat token explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.
By Doccio Clinical Team · Sources reviewed September 2026
A repeat token is the new token provided after an electronic prescription is dispensed when another authorised repeat remains. It lets the pharmacy access the next supply. It is different from asking a doctor to issue a new prescription after all authorised supplies have been used. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance
Why the original message may not be enough
Each dispensing step changes the prescription's status. The message you first received may no longer be the current token to use. Keep the newest repeat message somewhere you can find it, and avoid assuming that a saved screenshot from an earlier supply is still suitable.
If your phone contains several similar messages, ask the pharmacist to help identify the current one. Do not delete every message while trying to tidy your inbox until you know which token is needed. Record the pharmacy's advice if you are helping a family member manage prescriptions.
What if the repeat message is missing?
Contact the pharmacy that dispensed the previous supply. Explain the patient's details and approximately when it was collected, using the pharmacy's approved communication channel. The pharmacist can advise on the available recovery process and the prescription's current status. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance
A missing token and an exhausted prescription are different problems. If no repeats remain, resending a previous token will not create a new authorised supply. A prescribing review may be needed.
Moving between pharmacies
You can generally choose which pharmacy receives an electronic prescription, subject to normal legal and dispensing requirements. Ask the next pharmacy about stock and how to provide the current token. Do not assume a previous pharmacy has automatically transferred every relevant record. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance
Doccio's eScript guide explains the wider process. For a new prescription request, use the appropriate assessment pathway and tell the doctor about previous dispensing and any changes in health. The doctor decides whether further prescribing is appropriate; a repeat token is an administrative access tool, not a substitute for that decision.
