Telephone consultation
Telephone consultation explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.
By Doccio Clinical Team · Sources reviewed September 2026
A telephone consultation is a healthcare appointment conducted by voice call. It can be useful for some clinical discussions, but the doctor cannot see the patient or perform a physical examination. Suitability depends on the health question, available history and whether another assessment is needed. Australian Government telehealth guidance Medical Board telehealth guidelines
Make the conversation usable
Choose a quiet, private place and keep your phone charged. Confirm the contact number supplied to the clinic and whether its call may appear as private or unknown. If hearing, language or communication needs could affect the appointment, ask about support in advance.
Have a short timeline of symptoms and a list of current medicines ready. Describe visible changes in plain language without assuming the doctor can infer them. If photographs are requested, use the clinic's approved channel and understand that images may still be insufficient.
Know when a different format is needed
The clinician may recommend video, an in-person examination or urgent care. Some questions cannot safely be answered from voice history alone. A request for a familiar treatment does not remove that limitation. Medical Board telehealth guidelines
Tell the doctor if you cannot speak privately or if someone else is answering for you. Consent and an accurate history matter. If a call drops out, contact the service to confirm the plan rather than treating an incomplete sentence as final advice.
Finish with clear next steps
Repeat back the key plan if you are uncertain: what you should do, what is being arranged and when to seek further help. Ask how any document or prescription will arrive and whether you need to book follow-up.
Doccio's online doctor service provides current booking information; confirm which formats are offered for your selected service. Fees and Medicare eligibility should be checked separately from the fact that a consultation is by phone. A doctor decides what outcome is supported, and emergency symptoms require emergency care rather than a routine telephone appointment.
