WorkCover certificate is an informal name often used for a scheme-specific medical certificate describing a worker's condition and capacity after a work-related injury or illness. The official title and rules vary between jurisdictions. It is different from a standard employer sick note and may require detailed assessment of suitable duties and restrictions.
What does a certificate of capacity explain?
It may describe the injury or illness, whether the person can work, which tasks are suitable and when review is needed. The focus is often functional capacity rather than a simple fit or unfit label. The treating clinician needs a realistic description of the job.
Bring the relevant scheme form, claim details and information about proposed duties. Do not assume a generic certificate can be substituted. WorkSafe Victoria, for example, has specific requirements for its certificate of capacity; other jurisdictions have different rules.
For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see worksafe.vic.gov.au: Certificate of capacity - WorkSafe Victoria.
Can any clinician issue it?
The authorised practitioner and permitted certification period depend on the scheme and whether it is an initial or later certificate. Check current official requirements. A provider may also choose not to offer these assessments if they cannot obtain enough information or provide the necessary follow-up.
A doctor should only certify findings and capacity they can support. Payment for an appointment does not guarantee a particular restriction, duration or claim outcome. An examination may be essential, particularly after an injury or when duties involve safety risks.
How is it used after issue?
The certificate may support an insurer's assessment and a workplace return-to-work plan. It does not itself decide liability, benefit approval or the exact duties an employer can offer. Keep copies and arrange review before certification lapses where ongoing evidence is required.
Check Doccio's medical certificate service information before booking for a WorkCover document. This glossary does not confirm that the service completes scheme-specific forms. Your regular GP or an occupational clinician may be the appropriate provider.
Where to go next
Read medical certificates to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
