Short answer

A form or text exchange alone is not a substitute for an appropriate prescribing assessment. Medical Board guidance says prescribing for a patient never consulted in real time is not good practice, subject to limited exceptions. Expect the clinician to assess suitability, obtain necessary information and decide whether prescribing is appropriate. Medical Board telehealth guidelines

An intake form and a consultation do different jobs

A form can collect symptoms, history and contact details before an appointment. It can help organise information, but it does not guarantee the clinician has enough detail to make a prescribing decision. Questions may need clarification or lead to further assessment. Do not assume that completing payment or selecting a treatment request means approval has occurred. The doctor remains responsible for assessing the patient. A service should make clear what happens after the form and how you will communicate with the clinician.

What does real-time consultation mean?

A real-time interaction lets the clinician and patient communicate during the assessment, rather than relying only on messages sent at different times. Medical Board guidance discusses telephone, video and in-person consultations and expects doctors to judge the appropriate format. Medical Board telehealth guidelines

Video is preferred where practicable, but the essential question is whether the clinician can assess the situation adequately. A brief call does not automatically make every request appropriate. The doctor may still need records, examination or testing before deciding what to do.

Does an existing patient always need the same process?

The Board's guidance recognises limited circumstances in which prescribing without a new real-time consultation may occur, including some arrangements within an existing treating relationship. These are not a blanket permission for every renewal request or every online business model. Medical Board telehealth guidelines

Ask your usual clinic how its review process applies to your treatment. A service that has not previously assessed you cannot assume it has the same information as a clinician who manages your ongoing care. Even an established patient may need review when circumstances change.

Why do doctors ask about old treatment?

Previous use is relevant but does not settle current suitability. The clinician may ask about the original reason for treatment, response, side effects, other medicines and monitoring. New symptoms or changes in health can alter the decision. Medical Board telehealth guidelines

Have accurate records available and explain any gap in treatment. If you are uncertain about a dose or previous instruction, say so rather than guessing. A photograph of a package may assist communication but does not replace the broader clinical assessment.

Can I ask only for an eScript?

You can explain that your practical goal is a prescription, but the delivery format comes after the prescribing decision. An eScript is an electronic way to issue a prescription; it does not reduce the clinical requirements for deciding whether one should be issued. If you already have a valid prescription and only lost the token, the issue may be administrative. Contact the original clinic or last dispensing pharmacy as appropriate. Read lost eScript tokens before booking another prescribing assessment.

What if the doctor cannot prescribe online?

Ask what is needed next. The clinician may recommend an in-person examination, your regular prescriber, further records or another service. Understanding the reason helps you arrange the right follow-up rather than repeat the same request across multiple providers. Medical Board telehealth guidelines

If timing is urgent because supply is running low, tell the pharmacist and clinic. Do not conceal recent prescribing or consultations in an effort to obtain a different answer. An accurate treatment history is part of safe decision-making.

Review Doccio prescriptions for the current assessment pathway and pricing for fees. A request is considered by a doctor, and a prescription is issued only when appropriate. The consultation should help establish a sensible plan even when the requested prescription is not the outcome.
