Can I take sick leave for my mental health?
Understand sick leave for mental health, evidence requirements, what to discuss with a doctor and when to seek urgent support.

Sick leave can apply when a mental health problem means you cannot work because of personal illness. Fair Work's paid sick-leave guidance includes stress-related illness. Whether you need evidence depends on the applicable requirements, and a doctor decides what an assessment supports. The phrase “mental health day” does not itself establish entitlement. Focus on how you are affected
You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis or a particular label. Explain what has changed, how long it has been happening and how it affects your ability to work. Difficulties concentrating, sleeping or coping may be useful things to discuss, but the doctor needs your actual experience rather than a checklist chosen to secure a certificate.
Describe relevant work duties and any immediate safety concerns. If you have been receiving care, tell the doctor about the existing plan and any changes. The assessment should consider your wellbeing as well as the evidence you may need for an absence.
A day off and a clinical assessment have different purposes
Someone may need a short period away from work, while another person needs ongoing support or a broader assessment. A certificate records what the clinician can support about the absence; it does not replace a treatment plan or solve a workplace problem by itself.
If the issue is recurring, say so even if today's request concerns only one day. Ask what follow-up would be useful and who should provide it. A remote consultation may be suitable for some discussions, but the doctor should recognise when another type of care is needed. Medical Board telehealth guidelines
What does Fair Work require?
The starting point is inability to work because of personal illness or injury. Evidence can be requested for one day or less, and you should notify your employer as soon as possible with the expected duration. The evidence must reasonably support the entitlement to leave. A paid leave balance and an eligible reason are separate requirements. If you are unsure about available hours or your employment arrangement, check with payroll. The doctor assesses the clinical circumstances rather than determining the employer's leave balance.
Do I need to tell my employer everything?
Ask what information is required for the particular leave process. A request for evidence of absence is not automatically a request for your whole clinical history. Discuss document wording with the clinician and explain any specific form your workplace has supplied. Office of the Australian Information Commissioner: Health information
If the employer is asking about a separate fitness-for-work or safety assessment, get advice about that exact request. Those circumstances can differ from an ordinary sick-leave certificate. Avoid assuming either that an employer can demand every detail or that no additional medical information can ever be relevant. What if the problem is related to work?
Tell the doctor about the relationship you notice between work and your symptoms. They can consider the clinical picture, but a certificate does not resolve a dispute about workload, bullying or employment conditions. You may need support from more than one service.
Keep a clear account of what has happened and identify the question each person can help with. A treating clinician addresses health; an employment adviser or union may help with workplace rights. Do not feel you must choose one explanation before seeking help.
When should I seek urgent support?
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 000 rather than waiting for an online certificate request. Healthdirect lists crisis and after-hours support options, including Lifeline on 13 11 14. A routine document service is not an emergency response. Healthdirect’s after-hours healthcare guide
If you are not in immediate danger but are struggling, arrange an appropriate clinical discussion. Tell the service if you need help sooner than the available routine appointment. Be clear about your current situation so it can direct you to an appropriate pathway.
What is the next step with Doccio?
Choose the service that matches the clinical need, not simply the document price. Doccio offers doctor care and medical certificate assessments, with prices shown on the pricing page. A certificate or particular period of leave is subject to assessment. Doccio’s published service pricing
Prepare the dates, your main concerns and any existing care details. Before finishing, ask what to do if symptoms continue, who will provide follow-up and how to obtain any supported documentation. The useful outcome is a clear care plan as well as accurate expectations about the certificate.
