Short answer

Working from home does not remove sick-leave entitlements. If personal illness or injury means you cannot work, the usual eligibility, notice and evidence rules apply. Being physically able to reach your laptop is different from being well enough to perform your duties. A doctor assesses your individual circumstances. The question is capacity to work

Remote work changes the location, but it does not eliminate the demands of the role. Concentration, decision-making, speaking, computer use and sustained attention may still be essential. Describe the duties affected when discussing your health with a clinician.

You do not have to compare yourself with a colleague who worked through a similar-sounding illness. Symptoms, job demands and individual circumstances differ. Equally, working remotely does not automatically justify a certificate: the doctor needs a clinical basis for any opinion about incapacity. Avant: Medical certificates — your responsibilities

Tell your manager which arrangement you need

Be clear whether you are taking leave or asking to work modified hours or duties. Sending a brief handover message does not necessarily mean you are available for the rest of the day. An agreed plan helps avoid repeated requests for meetings while you are away.

Fair Work says employees should notify the employer as soon as possible and indicate the expected period of leave. If that changes, update the employer when you can. You do not need to wait until a medical document is available before communicating the absence. Fair Work guidance on notice and medical evidence

Can an employer ask for evidence for one remote day?

Evidence can be requested for one day or less of sick or carer's leave. Working at home does not create a separate exemption from the usual requirements. Check the relevant award, registered agreement and workplace process to understand what reasonable evidence is requested. Fair Work guidance on notice and medical evidence

Ask whether the request concerns the whole day or a part-day absence. If you stopped work after several hours, give the clinician the actual timeline. A certificate should not be altered to match a payroll entry; genuine errors should be taken back to the issuing clinic.

What if I can manage some tasks but not others?

Discuss the practical limitations with the doctor and employer. Reduced hours, different duties or a period away may each be relevant, but an arrangement should not be assumed simply because the work is online. A standard absence certificate may not provide the detail needed for a specific work-capacity assessment.

Explain safety-sensitive tasks, important deadlines and whether symptoms are worsening during work. If the employer wants restrictions or a return-to-work opinion, tell the clinic before booking so it can advise whether the service is suitable. The doctor decides what can be supported. Caring for someone at home is a separate issue

You may be well yourself but unable to work because a family or household member needs care. That is a carer's leave question, not necessarily personal illness. The usual relationship, care and evidence requirements still apply even when both you and the person needing care are at home. Fair Work sick and carer’s leave guidance

Describe why care is needed and during which hours. Remote work should not be assumed to make substantial caring responsibilities compatible with every job. Read who carer's leave covers for the relevant distinctions.

Can I use telehealth from home?

Phone or video care may be appropriate, but some problems require examination or other assessment in person. Find a private place where you can explain symptoms without participating in work at the same time. Tell the doctor if anyone else is present or able to hear you. Australian Government telehealth guidance Medical Board telehealth guidelines

If symptoms persist, seek appropriate follow-up instead of repeatedly treating the problem only as a certificate request. Ask what changes should prompt earlier review and what care is needed before resuming normal duties.

Doccio's medical certificate service provides an assessment pathway, subject to the doctor's decision. For broader symptoms or advice about ongoing work capacity, consider a doctor consultation and explain the purpose of any requested documentation before the assessment.
