Can I use an eScript without a smartphone?
Explore printed tokens, email and Active Script Lists when you do not have a smartphone.

Yes. Electronic prescriptions can be accessed through options such as a printed token, email or an Active Script List at a participating pharmacy. Availability depends on the clinic and pharmacy systems. Tell the prescriber before the prescription is issued so they can arrange a method you can reliably use. The smartphone is only one way to carry a token
A token allows the pharmacy to access an electronic prescription. Although it is commonly sent by SMS, the prescription is not stored only on your phone. Losing access to a smartphone does not necessarily mean electronic prescribing is unavailable to you. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance
Explain whether you have a basic mobile, access to email, a printer or a trusted person who can assist. The most suitable option is the one you can use consistently, including for later repeats. Avoid choosing a contact method that you can access only occasionally without a backup plan.
Ask about a printed token
A printed token can be presented to a pharmacy that supports electronic prescribing. It remains a token for the electronic prescription, rather than becoming a traditional handwritten or printed paper prescription. That distinction matters when asking for replacements or handling repeats. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance
Check how you will receive the printout and what happens after the first dispensing. If another repeat token is generated, ask the pharmacy whether it can provide a usable printed version. Keep it somewhere you can find it before the next supply is needed.
Email may work if you can access it
Some services can send the token by email. Confirm that you can open it and present or print the relevant information before relying on this method. Check the address carefully when booking and tell the clinic if the message does not arrive. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance
Use an address you control or an agreed arrangement with a trusted helper. A shared work inbox may not be an appropriate place for personal health information. If someone helps you manage email, explain the arrangement to the clinic and consider what information they will be able to see.
What is an Active Script List?
An Active Script List is an optional system that can allow participating healthcare providers to access your electronic prescriptions with permission, reducing the need to manage separate tokens. A pharmacy can explain registration, consent and how it works in its system. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance
It is not the same as every pharmacy app or a general list you write yourself. Ask whether your usual pharmacy supports it and how you would use another pharmacy if needed. You should understand the arrangement before deciding whether it suits you.
Can a family member manage the token?
The Australian Digital Health Agency explains that you can share a token with a trusted person to assist with collection. Check the pharmacy's requirements and arrange how instructions and new repeat tokens will reach you. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance
Read collection by another person for practical steps. If assistance will be ongoing, ask the pharmacy how permissions and contact details should be recorded. Do not assume that a one-off forwarded message establishes a continuing care arrangement.
What if I prefer a paper prescription?
Discuss your preference with the prescriber before issue. Electronic and paper prescriptions are different ways of providing the prescribing authority, and services may have operational limits on what they can provide remotely. Ask what options are actually available for your appointment. Australian Digital Health Agency prescribing guidance
Do not expect both formats to create two supplies from the same prescribing decision. If a format needs changing, the clinician and pharmacy must handle it through the appropriate process. A photograph of paper is also not automatically equivalent to an eScript token.
When using Doccio prescriptions, explain access needs before booking or issuing. For the underlying process, read how eScripts work. The doctor decides whether prescribing is appropriate, and the delivery method should let you use any issued prescription safely and reliably.
