Do casual employees need medical certificates?
Learn how evidence requests, unpaid carer’s leave and paid sick leave differ for casual employees.
By Doccio Clinical Team · Sources reviewed September 2026
Casual employees generally do not receive paid sick leave under the National Employment Standards, but an employer may still have absence notification and evidence requirements. Casuals can have unpaid carer's leave entitlements. A medical certificate records a clinical opinion; it does not itself create paid leave or guarantee employment protection. Start with the reason you are absent
There is an important difference between being unwell yourself and needing to care for someone else. Paid personal/carer's leave is an entitlement for eligible full-time and part-time employees. Casual employment does not carry that same paid leave balance under the National Employment Standards. Fair Work guidance on paid personal/carer’s leave
Unpaid carer's leave is a separate entitlement and can apply to casuals. Tell your employer which circumstance applies so the request is recorded correctly. A document about your own illness may not answer a request for evidence that you needed to care for a family or household member.
No paid balance does not mean no communication
Let the employer know as soon as practicable that you cannot attend an accepted shift. Explain the likely duration and ask what evidence is needed. Fair Work's notice and evidence rules are particularly relevant to unpaid carer's leave, including the possibility of requests for short absences. Fair Work guidance on notice and medical evidence
For your own illness, check your contract, award, agreement and workplace absence process. Avoid assuming that an informal arrangement used for one previous shift applies indefinitely. Keeping the message in writing makes it easier to resolve a later misunderstanding about the dates or reason you notified work.
What can a certificate actually establish?
A doctor can assess your health and, where justified, document relevant incapacity or a need for care. The doctor does not decide payroll classifications or change casual status. They also cannot guarantee that a workplace will resolve every dispute in your favour. Avant: Medical certificates — your responsibilities
Tell the clinician what the employer has requested, your actual duties and the affected shift. Someone doing physically demanding work may have different practical limitations from someone doing administrative work. The clinical assessment should address your circumstances, not use a standard statement simply because your employment is casual.
Can I use a statutory declaration?
Fair Work recognises statutory declarations and medical certificates as examples of evidence for sick and carer's leave. The evidence should satisfy a reasonable person, and an award or registered agreement may contain relevant requirements. Fair Work guidance on notice and medical evidence
Ask the employer what it needs before paying for an assessment solely for paperwork. If the request appears unreasonable or conflicts with the governing arrangement, get employment advice. Do not alter a certificate, reuse a document from a different absence or assume a declaration can truthfully state something you do not know.
What if the illness continues?
An ongoing health problem deserves appropriate care even when no paid leave is available. Explain persistent symptoms, changing work capacity and any safety issues to a clinician. If a physical examination or ongoing management is needed, a short online certificate pathway may not be the right service. Medical Board telehealth guidelines
Keep the employer updated about the likely duration as information changes. If you are being asked about returning to particular duties, clarify whether it needs an ordinary absence certificate or a specific work-capacity assessment. Those documents answer different questions and may require different clinical information.
Where should a disagreement go?
Keep copies of the roster, absence notice, evidence request and any certificate you provided. These help an employment adviser understand what happened. The fact that a certificate exists does not by itself settle every question about casual engagement, future shifts or legal protection.
Fair Work, your union or a qualified employment adviser can explain the rules applying to your situation. A doctor can explain the limits of the medical opinion but should not be expected to certify a legal conclusion.
If you need health assessment, see Doccio medical certificates. For the distinction between paid balances and evidence, read the sick-leave guide. Check the service fee before booking and remember that the clinician decides whether any requested certificate is appropriate.
