Short answer

Your employer can ask for evidence for one day or less of sick or carer's leave. That does not mean every short absence automatically requires a medical certificate. Check your workplace requirements: the evidence must be reasonable, and Fair Work recognises medical certificates and statutory declarations as examples. There is no universal two-day rule

People sometimes assume that certificates are only needed after two consecutive days, after a weekend or once several absences have accumulated. Those may be features of an individual workplace process, but they are not a universal rule that overrides the actual evidence requirements. Fair Work expressly allows an employer to request evidence for an absence of one day or less. Fair Work guidance on notice and medical evidence

An award or registered agreement may specify when evidence is required and what type is needed. Ask your manager or payroll team where the relevant requirement is recorded. Knowing the rule before you book can help you choose the right assessment and avoid paying for a document that does not address the request.

Tell your employer before the paperwork arrives

Notify your employer as soon as possible and explain how long you expect to be away. Fair Work recognises that notice may occur after leave begins where that is the earliest practical opportunity. Waiting for a certificate is not a reason to postpone all communication about your absence. Fair Work guidance on notice and medical evidence

For a short absence, be clear whether you missed a complete shift, arrived late or left early. If the roster crosses midnight, provide the actual shift details. An employer needs to record the relevant time, while a clinician needs an accurate description of the period and circumstances they are being asked to assess.

What should the doctor know?

Explain when the problem started, what symptoms affected you and why you could not perform your work. Describe the duties rather than only the job title. A role may involve driving, public contact, concentration or physical tasks that are relevant to the assessment.

If you are already feeling better, say so. Do not exaggerate current symptoms to make an earlier absence seem more convincing. The doctor considers the available information and decides whether a certificate is supported. They may need further questions or a different assessment pathway. Does short leave mean a simpler clinical problem?

Not necessarily. A one-day absence can involve symptoms needing broader assessment. If you want medical advice as well as evidence, explain that when choosing the service. Persistent, recurrent or concerning symptoms should not be reduced to an administrative request simply because the workplace needs a document.

Conversely, needing evidence does not mean every absence requires treatment. The assessment should address your actual circumstances. If another clinician has already assessed the issue, have the relevant record available and explain what additional evidence the workplace has requested.

What if my employer accepts another form of evidence?

Fair Work lists statutory declarations as an example alongside medical certificates. The evidence must reasonably establish the entitlement to the leave, and the appropriate form depends on the circumstances and applicable arrangements. Do not assume either that a declaration is always enough or that only a doctor's certificate can ever be considered. Fair Work guidance on notice and medical evidence

Ask the employer a specific question about the evidence requirement. If there is a disagreement, keep the written request and obtain advice from Fair Work, your union or an employment adviser. A clinic cannot guarantee how every workplace dispute will be resolved.

A certificate and paid leave are separate

A certificate supports the reason for an absence. It does not create paid hours in an empty balance or change your employment status. If you need an assessment, Doccio lists a one-day certificate request at $19, subject to the doctor's decision. Check current pricing and the certificate service before booking. Keep your dates and workplace instructions ready so the assessment can address the correct request. Doccio’s published service pricing
