Do I need a Medicare card for an online doctor?
Separate Medicare rebates, patient identification and private online consultation fees in Australia.
By Doccio Clinical Team · Sources reviewed September 2026
A Medicare card is not a universal requirement for privately billed online care, but each service sets its eligibility and identification process. Medicare rebates have separate rules. Before booking, confirm whether the clinic accepts patients without Medicare, what identification it needs and the total consultation fee you will pay. Access to care and a rebate are separate
Medicare eligibility concerns whether a benefit can be paid for a qualifying service. It does not mean every online consultation is bulk billed or that every private service requires a Medicare card. Telehealth benefits depend on the applicable MBS item and eligibility requirements. Services Australia telehealth eligibility guidance
Ask the clinic to explain its billing model in plain language. A fee displayed on a booking page might be the full private charge or a charge with a possible rebate. Do not infer the answer from the word telehealth or from another clinic's arrangements.
What should I ask before paying?
Confirm whether the service accepts your circumstances, including your age and current location. Ask what identification is required if you do not hold Medicare. The clinician still needs to establish the patient's identity and obtain enough information for an appropriate assessment. Medical Board telehealth guidelines
If you have private health insurance, overseas visitor cover or travel insurance, check reimbursement directly with the insurer. A receipt does not guarantee a claim will be accepted. Ask what documentation the insurer needs without expecting the doctor to alter clinical records to fit an insurance request.
What about Doccio's prices?
Doccio uses a pay-per-consult model. The supplied service pricing is $59 for doctor consultations during business hours and $79 after hours, with separate listed fees for certificate and repeat-prescription assessment pathways. Check Doccio pricing for the service you intend to use and current booking eligibility. Doccio’s published service pricing
Do not assume a consultation price includes medicines, testing or another provider's appointment. Ask about potential additional costs if the doctor recommends these. A privately paid consultation can lead to further care with its own eligibility and billing rules.
Can I use someone else's Medicare details?
Provide your own accurate identity and contact information. If you are booking for a child or another person, follow the clinic's process for that patient rather than substituting your details to make the form proceed. Tell the service who will actually be assessed. Medical Board telehealth guidelines
If a form will not accept your situation, contact the clinic before payment. An administrative workaround may create incorrect records or documents. A support person can help with booking, but the clinical record still needs to identify the correct patient.
Will an eScript work without a Medicare card?
Electronic prescribing and Medicare consultation rebates are different systems. Australian Government guidance includes people with an Individual Healthcare Identifier among those who can receive electronic prescriptions. Services Australia explains how people who are not eligible for Medicare can obtain an identifier. Ask your clinician what identification is needed. Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing: Electronic prescribing Services Australia: Individual Healthcare Identifiers
If prescribed, pharmacy costs are separate from the consultation. Subsidy eligibility and the product supplied affect what you pay. Check with the dispensing pharmacy rather than assuming that receiving an eScript means the medicine will be subsidised or included in the clinic fee.
Does having Medicare guarantee a rebate?
No. Services Australia sets out item-specific eligibility requirements and exceptions for telehealth. A Medicare card alone does not establish that a particular appointment can be claimed. Ask the practice whether the proposed service attracts a benefit in your circumstances before booking. Services Australia telehealth eligibility guidance
Read Medicare and online doctor visits for the broader distinction between bulk billing, private fees and rebates. If the clinic cannot confirm your eligibility, seek clarification rather than relying on an estimated out-of-pocket amount.
For an appointment, review the online doctor service, prepare the identification the clinic requests and disclose your actual location. The doctor then decides what care is appropriate; payment and Medicare status do not guarantee a prescription, certificate or referral.
