There is no single national price for an ADHD assessment in Australia. Your total depends on the clinician, appointments, reports and any rebates you are eligible to claim. Ask for a quote covering the full assessment and expected out-of-pocket cost, because the first appointment may be only part of the expense.
For context, a national access study described by the University of Wollongong in March 2026 reported average adult assessment costs of nearly $1,400 in total, with some approaching $4,000. These are research findings across contacted services, not a current quote for your clinic or your final out-of-pocket cost. Which parts of the pathway have separate fees?
There are several potentially separate expenses along the pathway. Comparing them individually makes it easier to understand what you are being offered.
- Referral consultation: The doctor's fee to assess whether a referral is appropriate.
- Initial assessment appointment: Whether this begins a full assessment or is a preliminary screening visit.
- Further assessment sessions: How many are expected and whether they are included in a package.
- Feedback and written report: Whether these are included or charged separately.
- Ongoing care: Fees for treatment reviews, psychological support and other follow-up.
At Doccio, an ADHD referral consultation costs $59 during business hours or $79 after hours. This is not the price of an ADHD diagnosis. Specialist assessment and treatment are separate services with their own fees.
Will Medicare help, and how do I calculate the gap?
Eligible psychiatrist consultations may attract a Medicare rebate when you have a valid referral and the relevant requirements are met. That does not necessarily cover the full charge or every component of an assessment package. RANZCP Your Health in Mind: Cost to see a psychiatrist (Australia)
Ask the clinic for the appointment type, expected rebate and likely gap for your circumstances. Avoid assuming that another patient's rebate will apply to you: the service provided and eligibility requirements matter.
A mental health treatment plan does not automatically make a psychologist's diagnostic assessment or testing package Medicare-funded. If a provider advertises a rebate, ask which specific service it applies to and whether there are parts you must pay for in full. Services Australia: Mental health care and Medicare
How do I calculate the out-of-pocket cost?
Use the full quoted fee minus the rebate the clinic confirms you can expect, then add any separate charges. As a simple illustration, a $1,000 fee with a confirmed $300 rebate would leave a $700 gap. Those numbers are an arithmetic example, not an actual Medicare rebate or advertised assessment price.
Also check when payment is due. You may need to pay the full consultation fee before a rebate is processed. Ask whether the clinic submits the claim and what happens if your eligibility cannot be confirmed.
If several appointments are proposed, request an estimate for all of them rather than calculating from the first visit alone.
What should I ask before paying a deposit?
Request a written fee explanation that answers:
- What exactly is included in the quoted amount?
- How many appointments are expected, and what could make the total higher?
- Is a report included, and is there an extra fee for a specific work or study letter?
- What is payable if the assessment does not lead to an ADHD diagnosis?
- Are ongoing treatment appointments available, and what do they cost?
- What are the cancellation and rescheduling conditions?
An assessment fee pays for clinical work, not a particular diagnostic outcome. The clinic should explain its fees clearly regardless of whether ADHD is ultimately diagnosed.
What if cost is a barrier or I need ongoing care?
Tell your referring doctor. Ask about public services, concession arrangements, lower-fee clinicians or payment options appropriate to your circumstances. These options may have eligibility limits or restricted availability; free adult ADHD assessment is not universally available.
If you compare providers, check that their assessments cover the same things. A cheaper screening appointment and a comprehensive diagnostic assessment are different products. Likewise, paying for a psychological assessment may not remove the need for medical assessment if you later seek medication.
Plan for care after the assessment
Before committing, ask who will explain the findings, provide ongoing support and manage any treatment that is recommended. A report without a clear next step can leave you facing further appointments and costs.
Our adult ADHD assessment guide can help you compare pathways. If you first need to discuss whether referral is appropriate, speak with a Doccio doctor.
Doccio's psychiatry partner is SetMind, an Australian online psychiatry practice for adults offering ADHD assessments and shared-care plans by telehealth. Your doctor can address a referral to SetMind or to any clinic you prefer; SetMind confirms its fees and any Medicare rebate in writing before you book.
