A sleep study records breathing and other body signals during sleep to investigate problems such as suspected obstructive sleep apnoea. A GP may consider a referral after assessing symptoms, risk factors and screening results. Some people qualify for a home study; others need a laboratory assessment or specialist review. A referral is not automatic.
What symptoms might suggest I need a sleep study?
Loud regular snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, waking gasping, unrefreshing sleep and excessive daytime sleepiness can raise concern about obstructive sleep apnoea. Symptoms alone do not confirm the condition; several other sleep and medical problems can cause fatigue.
The doctor may ask how sleepiness affects driving or work, whether anyone has observed breathing pauses, your sleep schedule and relevant health conditions. Tell them if you feel sleepy while driving. You should avoid driving when you cannot stay alert and seek medical advice promptly.
What happens during an online sleep assessment?
A GP can discuss your sleep history and assess possible risk factors remotely. Validated screening questionnaires are used in some Medicare direct-referral pathways. The doctor may need measurements, previous records or in-person assessment to establish the safest next step.
If the clinical picture is complex, a respiratory or sleep physician may need to assess you rather than arranging direct testing. The MBS Online factsheet explains the rules for GP-requested diagnostic sleep studies and eligibility screening.
Is a home sleep study different from a laboratory study?
A home sleep study uses portable equipment to record selected breathing and related signals during a night in your own home. It can be appropriate for selected people with suspected sleep apnoea. Because it collects a limited set of measurements, it may not answer every clinical question.
A laboratory sleep study takes place in a specialist sleep service and generally records more detailed information. It may be appropriate for complex symptoms, certain comorbidities or when a home study does not provide a clear answer. The supervising service advises which testing pathway is suitable.
Will Medicare pay for a sleep study?
There are Medicare Benefits Schedule items for eligible sleep investigations, but coverage depends on the specific test, indications, referral pathway, screening requirements and provider. A GP referral does not automatically make a home or laboratory study Medicare-rebatable.
Before attending, ask the sleep provider which item applies, whether you meet the eligibility criteria and what the total cost will be. Avoid relying on an advertised 'free sleep study' without confirming its conditions. See Australian Government eligibility guidance.
What happens after I receive the results?
The sleep service interprets the recordings and sends a report to the referring practitioner. Depending on the findings, the doctor may recommend a discussion with a sleep physician, lifestyle or sleep-related strategies, further testing or another appropriate management pathway.
One test does not always explain all sleep symptoms. If the report is normal but you remain significantly sleepy, follow up with your GP. If you have sudden severe breathlessness or another acute emergency symptom, seek urgent in-person care instead of booking a routine study.
